the green machine

Looking for an easy breakfast AND a way to increase your fruit & veggie intake?  Look no further, this smoothie is delicious.  If you make it with orange juice, drinking 1/2 of this recipe will be about 3 servings of fruit/vegetables.  The only thing it's lacking is protein, so you might want to eat some greek yogurt or peanut butter toast to round out the meal.

Ok, I know what you're thinking...ewww, spinach, that will be gross (at least that's what I heard when I was telling my sister about this concoction).  It's not, I promise.  The tart apple, spicy ginger and mellow banana flavours help to cover up the spinach.  Not that the flavour of spinach is bad, just not a breakfast flavour, unless paired with eggs and cheese.

The Green Machine

  • 1 granny smith apple
  • 2 bananas
  • 1-2 cups of spinach (or just throw in a big handful)
  • 1" piece of fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • squeeze of lemon juice
  • 12 ice cubes
  • 2 cups orange juice or water

Add all of the ingredients to the blender.  Pulse on and off a few times to break up the ice cubes, then blend on high ('liquify') until all ingredients are smoothly blended.
